Dive Brief:
- Alaska Airlines launched a new loyalty subscription plan to attract cost-conscious travelers, the airline announced Wednesday. The plan, Alaska Access, costs $5 per month and requires a 12-month commitment.
- Alaska Access offers customers early access to sale flights, a monthly Wi-Fi voucher and a personalized fare page.
- Alaska’s new subscription service is a response to customers' desire for personalized and tailored experiences, the airline said. The program “is part of our commitment to make travel more affordable and convenient for everyone,” Shane Jones, VP of business development at Alaska Airlines, said in a prepared statement.
Dive Insight:
Alaska Access builds off of Alaska Airlines’ Flight Pass, a subscription service launched in 2022 and the first of its kind by an U.S. airline.
While that program costs between $49 and $189 per month and offers more perks, including roundtrip flight credits and flexibility to change flights, Alaska’s new subscription service costs a fraction and targets a more price-sensitive demographic.
Alaska Access’ Wi-Fi monthly voucher, for example, saves frequent flyers seeking Wi-Fi access $8 per flight.
Consumers are concerned about the high cost of travel and largely unsatisfied with travel loyalty programs. Nearly half of travelers believe the prices on loyalty programs are too high, according to an arrivia report released last month.
